Fontaines DC - Starburster
Three days ago a ninety second video was posted on the bands socials (see link below) A homage to The Shining where green gunge oozes from a set of elevator doors as the slow, melodic opening verse of a song from the bands new album Romance seeps through the screen. Fontaines DC are back and on Wednesday night they debuted their first single from the forthcoming said album.
Starburster is bigger, more chaotic and louder then anything the band have ever done before. Elements where shown to us on Skinty Fia their excellent third album (and my record of the year 2022 My Top 10 Albums Of The Year 2022 (oldyellowbricks.co.uk) ) where the title track dabbled in this kind of hip hop, transcendent sound that is all so prominent in this new single. It's not to far fetched to say there's elements of Moby, Massive Attack maybe even Fat Boy Slim here as the band possibly venture into new territory with producer James Ford at the helm rather than Dan Carey who has produced all three of their previous records and Grian's solo stuff. Starburster is a claustrophobic, anxiety driven power house of a single, that demonstrates the bands ability to mutate into a different genre of music whilst still connecting with their punk roots all the while creating music that is uncompromising and evolutionary.
Romance is released on August 23rd and no doubt a tour is around the corner. I for one cannot fucking wait..
